Day 1, Color me a Lovely Shade of Forgetful!

Up early and ready to go, Jeff and I were awake by 7:30 and getting ready for class.
By lunch time he said he had about 15 pieces in the kiln and all I had done was 2 small copper leaves.
Please don't misunderstand, I learned a lot making those little babies, mainly that I don't use the hammer nearly hard enough! (Really?) You really got to put some "umph" in your swing.
After lunch we all moved on to bracelets, using anticlastic and synclastic techniques...this is what I came here for.
My biggest challenge, next to not swinging the hammer hard enough?
Not taking any photos...(Sorry, I'll have some tomorrow.)

We'll see what tomorrow brings!

Days Away...

I am one of the lucky ones.
My husband and I used to spend a week in the Blue Ridge on Motorcycles as our summer vacation but for the past two years this event has been canceled.
We NEEDED something else to do.
Last year we discovered William Holland.
Some husbands would say, "that's great, find someone to go with you and have fun"...but my husband jumped right in, with both feet.

Sometime during last years program Jeff said, "There's a two week long class on wax and casting that I want to sign up for", was I ever surprised! While we're not headed up for two weeks we are under way for our classes again this year.

After a very trying week of getting our home (a/c) situation all cleared up and getting the usual stalling tactics out of the way...

We are in Athens, our regular stop along the way.

After a day of walking around and visiting our usual places we headed over to Jittery Joe's for our afternoon fix. We were then informed that although Joe's is not going away the old garage in 5 Points will be closing and will probably be torn down.

This news was distressing enough to get us to settle in for a couple of hours...
(...in the end Jeff had too much coffee!)

In our wandering off our usual well beaten path we finally found Good Dirt. Anyone that knows me is aware of my love for all things pottery and clay. This is a gem of a studio. When I think of a pottery studio I think of a community and a vibe which this facility has plenty of. The studio is a huge old warehouse with a full gallery of pieces by no less than 25 potters, all of the work is beautiful and well worth the trip!

Our last stop of the day was a spectacular find and one I will implore anyone reading this and is within 200 miles to try...

I will say no more because I simply cannot speak words to convey my love for this venture. (I can say that I have tasted the best french fries ever!) You MUST try this place...and please take the time to go to their site!

We'll be on our way tomorrow...come on back for more!

Color my Friday

Happy Friday!

Then there is Wednesday Nights...

It's time for me to move on...
It's been almost 3 weeks of no air conditioning in the house and I have been avoiding the studio...I can't take it any longer! Not only am I getting backed up in orders...I am going through acetylene withdrawals.  This is why there have been no posting of any new pieces...but that is about to come to an end.

Last night we spent the evening at the Gem Society and I have some beautiful new Blue Lace cabs to set...probably rings...

One has the prettiest little off-center drusy.

I scored some Tiffany Stone a while back which I had never cut before. It's a fairly thick piece and I thought I was going to spend the whole night just cutting the main shape but to my surprise it went through the saw like a warm knife through butter!

Jeff purchased a bunch of transparent agate slabs and is working on a whole bunch of beautiful pieces, he's got something brewing I'm sure...

Henrik of  TopShelfLapidary came by and worked for a while to keep us company and share in the good news of his success in the ETSY world!  Henrik is one of my local suppliers of rough and slabs and I am so glad he has joined ETSY. Anyone who is looking for quality stones will be just as happy. Please check out his shop.

Wednesday nights are usually pretty slow in the studio. Note I did not say quiet! Ed (aka: Ed in TNwJ) was having a field day cutting slabs. It seems Ed hit the jackpot with some internet purchases and was using the slab saws like crazy.

That's one beautiful piece of Imperial Jasper!

So, please everyone, send positive thoughts to the air conditioner repairman! I'm desperate to get some of these beautiful stones set!

Here's to your weekend!

TNwJ

(Tuesday Nights with Jim.)

Last week I mentioned my poor choice of timing beginning this series yet did not mention why I felt this way...you see, our Tuesday night class is 9 weeks long and last night was the last class in our "Spring Semester".

As we progress beyond week 3 onwards to weeks 8 and 9 fewer students attend.
I say "only the strong willed survive."

I understand this process and how it happens. My own exploring has taken me from...watercolors to leather tooling, paper making, fanciful boxes, polymer clay, beading and glass bead making, pottery, silver, stone cutting, enameling, and now etching and soon form folding.

Many are still seeking the media that completes them and in that journey they will discover much about themselves and the others that are on the same path.

I have taken Jim's class and seen some students overwhelmed, smitten, confused and enthralled. I have sat next to, students that haven't touched a torch since college, first time silver workers, glass workers looking for another way of incorporating their work. I have worked side by side with Engineers, IT Specialists and a mother of twins who came to a very small room with relentless hammers "to relax".

Our common bond is to find the thing that keeps us dreaming, keeps our visions at the surface so we can get them out with whatever expresses us the most accurately and allows us to share them then move forward. We do this unselfishly, for our selves but for others as well. Like all artists we hope someone will connect, look and say "wow" even if it is so softly only they can hear it. ( I usually find myself doing this with pottery.)

This is what I was thinking while attending week 9 of our Spring Semester class last night. I know Jim has seen it all over his 17 years, but I still consider myself new in so many arenas of this process. The three of us still attending were still working hard at 5 minutes to 9 and trying to find a way to get Jim to throw in a Week 10 class, with all his enthusiasm  he said we could attend the Wednesday or Saturday class if you need, otherwise sign up for Summer Class. Even Jim needs a break...
Okay Jim Summer is here!

I don't know if I will ever see that cuff bracelet completed but the rest of us were forging ahead (pun intended) some with old projects, (my, now 6 pairs of earrings to get done.) and new.

Jim and Ed decided to take on some faceted stone setting...

In the end Jim got the most done during this class, I wonder if he will be back...

For the next two weeks we will be off from class but I will continue to push forward with Tuesday nights being dedicated to working on silver.

Jeff and I are headed to William Holland again, Jeff will be attending a glass fusing class and I will be learning the way of the mallet, fold forming...on to a new journey!

Tuesday Nights with Jim

TNwJ!

I've been thinking about this for some time now and while my timing could have been better, "Well begun is half done" as Jeff likes to say. I've been taking Jim's class at the Maitland Art Center for more than two years and for the past few months I've been thinking about photographing these classes and blogging about the students and amazing projects.

Each session is 9 weeks long and more fabulous than the array of projects, the collection of students never ceases to amaze me. Jim has been teaching at this hidden gem of an Art Center for 17 years, each week I understand more why he continues. I come back to his classes (and now assist, but only sometimes) because not only do I learn something every time I attend (really!) but the humor factor is off the scale, especially when Jim goes on a rant about Quantum Physics. (I have video of this that I will post sometime in the future, it's priceless!)

My project this week was to begin 4 sets of earrings:

There is a beautiful cuff bracelet taking shape...

and for some reason...this week EVERY one was soldering... a lot...even Jim!

I can't wait to see that cuff done!
I hope these postings will give each of you a little insight into our community of a place where each Tuesday Night ideas turn into dreams utilizing silver and copper.

Thanks for stopping in.

What's New in Clermont you ask?

Yesterday I changed locations of my downtown retail location and I am happy to announce that I am now partnering with Anne at Paper Dolls in their new location right on Montrose.

While I was visiting her new place I came across another new business, Not So Shabby is a "new" gently used home décor and home furnishings shop. It was there that I discovered my new display...

Not only is it the perfect size it even has scrolly things just like my earring display!
This is all thanks to my friend Christy at Tropical Cats Creations who was with us at the Ormond Beach show and has the most beautiful booth. She inspired me to do something new!

Since today was Mothers Day we had lots of families at our Farmers Market and plenty of the usual nonsense that comes all wrapped up in a little community such as ours.

Tink had her usual run of the center part of the market, where I am located.
She brings all visitors and vendors to her level...

and does her best not to neglect ANY visitors.

She smiles at EVERYONE!

I spent most of my day watching "The Birds that Live in the S".
A couple of weeks ago they started redecorating there little abode and today they seemed to be at it in full force.

They even drew some attention from the "A" Family that live down the way a bit...

...but they did not waste too much time getting advice, they just kept on working.

I can't help but wonder if I will be finding some of those baby bird feathers soon...
Happy Mothers Day!
